Overview
The Square Online Member Discount feature lets your members apply their member discounts when shopping on your Square Online store. When enabled, a Member Checkout button appears on your Square Online cart page. Members click this button, verify their membership, review their available discounts, and then return to Square Online to complete checkout with their discounts applied.
Setup
Step 1: Enable the Feature in Submatic
- Go to Settings > Business > Store Settings
- First select Yes for Using Square Ecommerce?
- Next add your Square Site URL
- Then select Yes for Use custom member checkout flow?
- Click Save Store Settings at the bottom of the page
Note: If your Square account is missing the required permissions, you'll see an error message. You may need to reconnect your Square account to grant the necessary access.
Step 2: Customize the Member Checkout Button (Optional)
Once the feature is enabled, a Configure button will appear next to the setting.
- Click Configure to open the button customization modal
- Button Shape — Choose Round (pill-shaped) or Square
- Button Color — Use the color picker to match your brand
- Click Sync to Square to push the button configuration to your Square Online site
The button text color (white or black) is automatically determined based on your chosen color.
How It Works for Your Customers
- Shopping on Square Online — Your customer browses your online store and adds items to their cart as usual.
- Member Checkout Button — On the cart page, a Member Checkout button appears alongside the standard checkout option.
- Identity Verification — After clicking the button, the customer is redirected to a Submatic page where member verification happens via email or SMS.
- Discount Review — Once verified, the customer sees a review page showing:
- Their order summary (items, quantities, prices)
- Member discounts that are automatically applied (these are your "unlimited" discounts in Submatic)
- Coupons they can optionally apply with a single click
- Updated totals reflecting all applied discounts
- Return to Square Online — The customer clicks Continue to Checkout, and their discounts are applied directly to the Square order. They're redirected back to their Square Online cart where they complete payment as normal — with the discounted prices already reflected.
Discount Behavior
- Member discounts (unlimited discounts in Submatic) are automatically applied. If a customer qualifies for multiple discounts on the same item, the highest-value discount wins.
- Coupons are shown separately and can be applied or removed by the customer before continuing.
- Discounts are applied in order: member discounts first, then coupons on the remaining subtotal.
- Taxes are recalculated based on the discounted totals.
Additional Notes
- Checkout sessions expire after 1 hour. If a customer doesn't complete the flow in time, they'll need to start again from the cart.
- Customers must verify their identity each session — this ensures only legitimate members can access discounts.
- If a customer clicks Return to Checkout Without Discounts, they're sent back to their Square Online cart with no changes applied.
