Submatic includes a built-in tipping feature that lets customers leave a tip after redeeming their membership credits at your point of sale. When a member completes a $0 redemption (using subscription credits or gift card balance), the POS will not prompt for a tip — but Submatic can automatically send a tip invitation via SMS or email.
How It Works
- A member redeems credit(s) at your point of sale
- Submatic detects the $0 order and sends the customer a tipping prompt
- The customer taps the link and chooses a tip amount
- Payment is processed using a card on file or a new card
The tip prompt is sent via SMS when the customer has a phone number on file. If no phone number is available, an email is sent instead.
Enabling Tipping
Tipping is enabled on a per-template basis:
- Go to Templates and select the template you want to configure
- Click Template Settings
- Under Tipping Logic, set Enable Tipping to Yes
- Click Save
Once enabled, any qualifying POS redemption tied to that template will trigger a tip prompt.
Tip Amount Options
When a customer opens their tipping link, they'll see:
- Preset percentages: 18%, 20%, and 25% — calculated against the pre-discount value of their order
- Custom amount: Customers can enter any tip amount (minimum $1.00)
The middle option (20%) is pre-selected by default.
Requirements
- Square integration: Tipping is currently supported for stores using Square as their payment processor
- Customer contact info: The customer must have a phone number or email address on file to receive the tipping prompt
- $0 order total: The tip prompt only triggers when the POS order total is $0 (i.e., the customer fully redeemed using membership credits or gift card balance)
Payment Processing
Tips are processed as one-time payments through your connected Square account. The customer can pay using:
- A card on file (if they have one saved)
- A new card entered at checkout
The tip appears in your Square account as a tip on the associated order.
